Intergenerational Project

ccmgeneabook5.gif

In the story, The Keeping Quilt, by Patricia Polacco, we learn about her keeping quilt that was passed down from generation to generation. From reading Patricia Polacco’s books, we know that many of her stories are written from her true-life experiences. We also learn about how different life was years ago compared to the world we live in now. In keeping with this topic, I would like for you to choose TWO of the following projects to be completed by
Monday, February 23rd.

1.        INTERVIEW PROJECT
* Interview someone in your family about their life when they were your age. Ask them 10 questions that show how different life was back then. Example questions might be: What did you do for fun? How much was an ice cream cone? What was your favorite meal to eat? How did you get to school? Please TYPE the question and answer, as an interview would look. Don’t forget to list the interviewee’s name, relation to you, and age.

* Then, answer the following questions in PARAGRAPH form:
What is the biggest difference that you see between life then and life now? What do you think life will be like 20 years from now?

2.        TRADITIONS AND CELEBRATIONS CHART

·                 Classify some of your family celebrations and traditions in a chart. You might include celebrations on one side of the chart and traditions associated with it on the other side. Examples: Birthday, Christmas, Easter, Summer Vacation.

3.        FOOD AND MENU PROJECT

·                 Work with your family to make up a menu. Choose foods that are common in your family heritage. Make a list for drinks, appetizers, main dishes, desserts.

·                 Choose one of the dishes listed and make it for the class to eat on February 23rd!

4.        FAMILY HEIRLOOM PROJECT

·                 Draw a picture of something in your family that has been passed down from generation to generation. Write about your drawing and write one page about the history of your family heirloom. If it’s not too valuable, you can bring it in to share as well!

5.        MAP PROJECT

·                 Make a map to show the class what countries or lands your families are from. Write about this country. Tell about the traditions of this country and how they relate to your family.

6.        FAMILY TREE PROJECT

·                 Create a family tree of your family! You can be as creative as you want in how you design it!

7.        FAMILY QUILT PROJECT

·                Design a quilt that could represent your family. Use 1 square of the quilt to represent each member of your family. Draw something that they like to do or draw a picture that describes them. This quilt should be for your extended family-  not just your immediate family (mom, dad, brothers, and sisters).

DUE DATE: Monday, February 23, 2009

Grandparents tea
We’ll also be having a Grandparents Tea on Friday, February 27th from 11:40-12:40. During this tea, your grandparents will be invited in to briefly talk about what life was like when they were your age. They can/should bring pictures or artifacts that might help us get a better picture of what life was like back then. We’ll serve iced tea and cookies for all! Please fill out the RSVP form below by February 6th.
