SHORT YOGA SESSIONS FOR THE CLASSROOM:

Applications in the classroom-Yoga Shorts I, II, and III:
The following pages provide scripts for short yoga sessions intended for use in the classroom. They are designed to be calming and help increase mental and physical focus. As one proceeds from I to III, the different scenarios get slightly more energizing. Depending on the tone of the classroom, you may find it useful to use one scenario over the other. You can certainly add, delete, or recombine poses. The standing and backward bending poses tend to energize the body and the forward bending poses will help calm the body. Each sequence is designed to take no more than FIVE MINUTES and can be used any time during the day, in any setting. The beginning of the school day is a good time, as is just after lunch. Using the breathing techniques before a test or public speaking is also useful.

Benefits for use with children in the classroom setting:
Children receive many of the same benefits as adults do when they practice yoga. Posture is improved. Physical and mental awareness improves as well. These short sessions appear to have a calming effect on the entire classroom- including the teachers. Students have mentioned that they are able to use the breathing techniques to help them get to sleep and to help them calm down when they are upset. When yoga is used in the classroom setting, a sense of community support develops and self-acceptance is nurtured. Children seem to enjoy the yoga sessions and you may notice that over time, with steady effort, that focus and cooperation improve.
